The Age of Absurdity | Why modern life makes it hard to be happy - Michael Foley

A book I’ve cherished and reread a couple of times over the past 10 years is “The Age of Absurdity” by Michael Foley. Perhaps now more than ever a much suggested read in these 'absurd' times: “The good news is that the great thinkers from history have proposed the same strategies for happiness and fulfillment. The bad news is that these turn out to be the very things most discouraged by contemporary culture. This knotty dilemma is the subject of The Age of Absurdity - a wry and accessible investigation into how the desirable states of well-being and satisfaction are constantly undermined by modern life”

Never split the difference - Chriss Voss

Jan Farasyn, Multicompany trainee, tells us about his favourite reading: "in this book, Chriss Voss presents you several techniques every negotiator should know. He substantiates them with examples from his experience as FBI hostage negotiator, professor and consultant. For me this is a must read, not only for people who are negotiating but for everyone - as everyone is confronted with negotiations, both in your private and in your professional life."

Doing good better - William McAskill

While a researcher at Oxford, William MacAskill decided to devote his study to a simple question: How can we do good better? MacAskill realized that, while most of us want to make a difference, we often decide how to do so based on assumptions and emotions rather than facts. As a result, our good intentions often lead to ineffective, sometimes downright harmful, outcomes. A must read!

Our iceberg is melting - John Kotter & Who moved my cheese? - Spencer Johnson

You might know these 2 books. They both are entertaining fables about dealing with change. I found the timing perfect to retrieve them from my bookshelf. They are easy to read (in a sunny chair ☀️) and remind us of what is important when everything around us suddenly changes.

In each episode of this podcast, Ward talks about one subject with a specialist. An episode I found very interesting was the one she made with Mary Poffenroth about fear: how it is literally killing you, the difference between stress and fear, how to get along with your co-workers, friends or partner better and how to talk to your brain when it has needlessly pulled the fire alarm

Iemand | Bob | The Black Out | Brand in het landhuis

"I prefer listening to stories because it helps me to unwind and think about nothing else. 'Iemand' is a beautiful podcast where they tell someone's story in every episode. Interesting to hear different people and their point of view. Other story podcasts I can definitely recommend are 'Bob', 'The Black Out' and 'Brand in het landhuis'."

I recently started listening to the '' business wars'' podcast on Spotify when running ! Awesome story telling on the biggest businesses like Boeing versus Airbus, Starbucks vs Dunkin Donuts.. Much recommended 🤓

How I built this - Guy Raz

In this podcast, Guy Raz dives into the stories behind some of the world's best known companies. It weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists—and the movements they built. Interesting to see (or hear) is how companies started, and that almost everyone failed before they accomplished their goals!

Le Gratin - Pauline Laigneau

Le Gratin – en particulier 2 épisodes que j’ai particulièrement appréciés. Stephanie Gicquel, sportive de l’extrême , avocate de formation et l’une des rares femmes à avoir traversé l’Antarctique à -50C° pendant 30h. L’épisode de Jean-Claude Bourrelier fondateur de Bricorama m’a marquée. Issu d’une famille humble, né sourd et obligé d’arrêter l’école à 13 ans pour subvenir aux besoins de la famille, Jean-Claude raconte comment il a saisit les opportunités qui se présentaient à lui et l’ont mené jusqu’à la création de l’empire Castorama qui compte plus de 250 magasins salariés réalisant 717 millions d’euros de chiffre d’affaire.

Universiteit van Vlaanderen

Ted Talk: The power of introverts

“A couple of years ago after I finished my ORMIT traineeship, I was talking with my coach about the difficulties I had 'as an introvert' to cope with social pressure of not being more at ease to mingle in social events, speak out my ideas/thoughts without having to take the time to think about it first, etc. … like “extroverts” easily do. She shared with me a very interesting Ted Talk regarding the fact that as we live in a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can indeed be difficult to be 'introvert'. Susan Cain argues in her passionate talk “The power of introverts” that introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and that they should be encouraged and celebrated. But what does she mean with that? Listen to her talk, and you’ll see things from another perspective.

Wellbeing by Anouk Doore

Body and mind are intertwined. The way we think influences what we do, what we do influences the way we think. It’s not a one way street

Here are 3 tips that might help during stressful and hectic times: Single task: Our brain is not made for multitasking, it kills our productivity by 40%. Say No: Always saying yes results in over-commitment sometimes. If you have trouble with saying ‘no’, imagine your best friend in that situation. What would your advice be? Then give that advice to yourself. Pay attention to your breathing: Breathing 6 times per minute (4 seconds in, 6 seconds out) can really help with calming you down

Re-read your emails when working from home

Always re-read what you’ve written before hitting send to make sure your message is clear and sets the intended tone. Sending 'Let’s talk' can have different meanings... If you are worried about how your tone will come across, pick up the phone. Your colleague (who is probably also working from home) might be glad for the chance to talk."

By being grateful, we can focus on the positive. This means we are less in fight/flight-mode and cortisol levels decrease, which is what we need for a strong immunity

Write down 3 good things that happen each day. It deepens your appreciation of what you are thankful for. Doing this for 21 days will boost your happiness and sense of well-being (Harvard University, Shawn Achor) 🙏How can you incorporate this in your team? Create a (digital) gratitude wall to share good things. Give each member access and go through it weekly when having a team meeting.

Choose quality sleep

👉 Regular bedtimes (it keeps your biological clock balanced), with a maximum of 1 hour of difference between weekdays and weekends 👉 Take a few minutes to focus on your breathing (4 seconds in, 6 seconds out) = 6 breaths per minute. 👉 No caffeine 6 hours before bedtime 👉 No alcohol 👉 Room temperature between 16° and 18° 👉 Start the day with light 👉 Power naps of max 20’ and not after 2PM

No to multitasking

Multi-tasking kills your productivity with 40%! There is only room for 1 item in our brain, and trying to do several things at the same time overloads your brain and gives you a stressed feeling. using the pomodoro technique: 25’ focus – 5’ break and a longer break after 3 blocks of focus.

Breathing

How? By breathing in for 4 seconds and breathing out for 6 seconds = 6 breaths per minute. By doing so we influence the part of our autonomic nervous system that helps us to relax.
